Amtrak Guest Rewards: How It Works and Why Every Commuter Should Use It

Amtrak Guest Rewards is Amtrak's free loyalty program. If you ride regularly and are not enrolled, you are leaving free trips on the table. Here is how it works.

How to earn points

You earn 2 points per dollar spent on Amtrak tickets. A $50 Northeast Regional ticket earns 100 points. Points do not expire as long as you have any earning or redeeming activity within 24 months, which is never a concern for regular commuters.

Signing up is free and takes about 2 minutes at amtrak.com. Add your Guest Rewards number when booking and points are automatically credited after your trip.

How fast points add up for commuters

A commuter spending $300 per month on Amtrak earns roughly 600 points per month, or about 7,200 points per year just from regular travel.

A one-way ticket on the NEC starts at around 750 points for a Regional coach seat, putting a round trip at roughly 1,500 points on the low end. At 7,200 points per year, most regular commuters can redeem for 4 or more free round trips per year without changing anything about how they travel.

Amtrak runs bonus point promotions periodically. Signing up for their emails gives you access to those offers and can accelerate earning significantly.

What you can redeem points for

Points redeem for Amtrak tickets. There is no transfer to airlines or hotels, but for a regular Amtrak commuter, free trips are exactly what you want.

One thing to avoid: Amtrak allows you to combine points and cash to pay for a ticket, but the conversion rate on partial redemptions is typically worse than paying with points alone. If you have enough points to cover a trip, use them fully. If you do not, pay cash and save the points until you do.

You can also earn bonus points through Amtrak credit card partners if you want to accelerate beyond what your regular commute earns.

Getting started

Sign up at amtrak.com/guest-rewards, add your number to your Amtrak account, and you're done. Every trip from that point forward earns points automatically.

Do not overthink the strategy. Enroll, let the points accumulate, and redeem for a free trip every few months. It costs nothing and rewards you for rides you are already taking.

RailCommute makes Amtrak commuting easier and cheaper

RailCommute monitors fares on your booked Amtrak trips and alerts you when a cheaper seat opens up. Automatic entry from email forwarding - no manual work.
