Why some Amtrak trains are late more than others
Most short-haul Amtrak trains that run close to schedule do so because they originate nearby. A train that started in Boston 4 hours earlier and is passing through Providence has whatever delay it collected along the way.
This is the single most predictive factor for on-time performance: how far upstream did the train start? A Northeast Regional that originates in Washington DC will almost always run better through the Philadelphia-DC segment than one that started in Boston or Springfield. When delay statistics look bad for your station, the first question is always where that train came from.
Track sharing is the other major factor. Amtrak shares tracks with freight railroads on most of its non-NEC routes. By law, freight traffic has priority over Amtrak on privately owned track, and a slow freight train can hold an Amtrak service for 20-40 minutes with no recourse. This is why some Midwest routes show inconsistent performance even on trains that originate locally.
How to check on-time performance before picking a train
The most useful free tool for this is the Amtrak Status History site run by juckins.net. You search by train number and time window, and it shows you historical on-time performance: average delay in minutes, percentage of trips that arrived on time, and how often the worst-case delays occur.
Spend 5 minutes checking your candidate trains before committing to a regular departure. If you're considering two trains that depart an hour apart and one runs 85% on-time while the other runs 45%, the choice is obvious, but you won't know without checking.
Also look at the average delay, not just the on-time percentage. A train that's 90% on-time but 40 minutes late the other 10% of the time creates a different planning problem than one that's 85% on-time but only 8 minutes late the rest.
What to do when your train is running late
Download the Amtrak app and enable push notifications. When a train is delayed, status updates appear in the app and on the Amtrak website. Knowing 30 minutes before departure that your train is already 20 minutes late gives you time to make decisions, catch a coffee, adjust your plans, or look for an earlier departure.
On high-frequency corridors (NEC, Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner), a delayed train is an inconvenience but not a disaster. There's usually another departure within 30-60 minutes. Check availability before committing to waiting for the late train.
On low-frequency routes (Wolverine, Cascades, Lincoln Service), a late train is more consequential because the next one might be 2-3 hours away. On these routes, build buffer into both ends of your schedule.
If your train hits a significant delay threshold, Amtrak will offer riders the option to switch to a different train at no charge. When this offer comes through, move on it immediately. The following trains will fill up fast as everyone scrambles for the same seats. Have the Amtrak app open, notifications on, and be ready to act the moment it appears.
Amtrak offers a delay compensation policy called "Amtrak Assurance." If your trip is delayed 60 minutes or more due to Amtrak's fault, you may be eligible for a voucher toward future travel. It's not automatic, you have to submit a request on Amtrak's website after the trip. Worth doing if your delay meets the threshold.
Building a delay-resilient commute schedule
The most important habit for frequent Amtrak commuters: don't book the last train that can get you there on time. Book the second-to-last. If your meeting is at 9 AM and the 7:30 AM train arrives at 8:55 AM with no buffer, you're exposed. The 7 AM train that arrives at 8:20 AM gives you 40 minutes of buffer.
For connections, Amtrak to subway, Amtrak to another train, Amtrak to a meeting across town, the same principle applies. Build in enough buffer that a 15-20 minute delay doesn't break your plan.
Know which trains on your corridor are reliable before you need to know. Checking once and building your regular schedule around the trains with the best on-time records is the most effective single thing you can do to reduce the disruption from delays.
