How Much Does Amtrak Cost in 2026? Real Fares Across the Top Commuter Routes

Amtrak fares are not fixed. They change by route, by day of the week, by how far in advance you book, and in real time as seats fill up. The same trip that costs $20 in January can cost $85 by March. Here are real fare ranges for the top commuter corridors, and what actually drives the price.

Northeast Corridor: New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston

The NEC is the busiest and most price-volatile Amtrak corridor. For coach seats, standard fares are non-refundable and locked to a specific train while Flex fares allow free changes and cancellations. Business class and Acela are separate products at significantly higher price points. Prices step through multiple tiers as seats fill. Fares pulled directly from Amtrak, May 2026.

RouteStandard fare range (non-refundable)
New York Penn Station to Washington Union Station (NYP–WAS)$20–$152
New York Penn Station to Philadelphia 30th Street (NYP–PHL)$10–$95
Philadelphia 30th Street to Washington Union Station (PHL–WAS)$10–$158
Boston South Station to New York Penn Station (BOS–NYP)$20–$114
Providence Station to New York Penn Station (PVD–NYP)$15–$106
New York Penn Station to New Haven Union Station (NYP–NHV)$10–$63

Fares pulled directly from Amtrak's site, May 2026. The low end reflects booking 2-4 months out. The high end reflects peak or last-minute pricing.

State Corridors: Midwest, California, Pacific Northwest

State-supported corridors tend to have more stable, lower fares. They are subsidized by state governments, which dampens the most extreme pricing spikes seen on the NEC.

RouteStandard fare range (non-refundable)
Chicago Union Station to Milwaukee Intermodal Station (CHI–MKE)$19–$37
Chicago Union Station to St. Louis Gateway Station (CHI–STL)$25–$89
Chicago Union Station to Detroit Amtrak Station (CHI–DET)$35–$111
Los Angeles Union Station to San Diego Santa Fe Depot (LAX–SAN)Flex only on this corridor
Sacramento Valley Station to Oakland Jack London Square (SAC–OKJ)$28–$31
Harrisburg Transportation Center to New York Penn Station (HAR–NYP)$54–$63
Seattle King Street Station to Portland Union Station (SEA–PDX)$27–$55
Albany-Rensselaer Station to New York Penn Station (ALB–NYP)$38–$99

Fares pulled directly from Amtrak's site, May 2026. The low end reflects booking 2-4 months out. The high end reflects peak or last-minute pricing. WAS–RIC excluded: only long-distance trains serve that segment, with coach fares starting at $338.

What actually drives the price

Amtrak uses demand-based pricing. Each train has a fixed number of seats divided into fare tiers. As lower tiers sell out, the system moves to the next tier at a higher price. For coach, standard fares are non-refundable and tied to a specific departure. Flex fares are fully refundable and changeable at a higher price point.

The biggest drivers of price: how far in advance you book, which day of the week you travel, whether the train is near capacity, and whether it's a holiday travel period. A Tuesday departure booked 3 months out and a Friday departure booked 3 days out on the same route can differ by $60-80.

How to always get the cheapest fare

Book as far in advance as possible. For NEC routes, that means 3-4 months. For state corridors, 3-6 weeks is usually enough.

Travel mid-week. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday departures are almost always cheaper than Monday, Friday, or Sunday.

Avoid holiday windows. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and 4th of July all see dramatic fare spikes on busy corridors weeks before the holiday.

Use Amtrak Guest Rewards. It's free to join and points accumulate on every ticket. Regular commuters can earn 4-8 free trips per year just from normal travel.

For commuters: If your employer offers commuter benefits, Amtrak qualifies for pre-tax transit spending. The 2026 monthly limit is $340, which can save $75-110/month in taxes depending on your bracket.

For regular commuters: track what you are actually spending

The fare ranges in this guide are what you should expect to pay. The fare you actually pay depends on your booking habits. Most commuters intend to book 3 months out and end up booking 3 weeks out, and that gap costs $15-50 per trip depending on the corridor.

Over a year of regular commuting, the difference is real money. A $20 fare difference per round trip, twice a week, is over $2,000 annually. The math changes fast when you can see it.
