Chicago Union Station to Dearborn Route Overview

The Wolverine departs Chicago Union Station and travels east through Indiana and Michigan, stopping at Michigan City, Niles, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, Ann Arbor, Dearborn (DBN), and Detroit New Center (DET) before continuing to Pontiac. Note: Dearborn and Detroit New Center are two separate stations roughly 12 miles apart.

At around 5 hours Chicago to Detroit New Center, this corridor is best suited for 2-3 day-per-week travel rather than daily. Ann Arbor (about 3.5 hours from Chicago) is the most popular intermediate commuter stop.

Michigan invested in track improvements between Kalamazoo and Dearborn, enabling higher speeds on this segment.

Three round trips run daily (Wolverine #350, #352, #354). With just three trains, missing your departure means a very long wait.

Chicago Union Station to Dearborn Pricing

Fares from Chicago to Detroit range from $35 to $113 for Value (non-refundable). Flex fares run $39-$119. Ann Arbor fares are somewhat lower given the shorter distance - check Amtrak.com for current Ann Arbor pricing.

The Wolverine is a candidate for multi-ride passes if you travel a consistent schedule, given the limited departure times that make ad-hoc booking harder.

Amtrak Guest Rewards points accumulate at the standard rate.

Booking Strategy

With only 3 trains per day, Value fares sell out faster than you might expect. Book at least 4-6 weeks out for consistently low fares.

Friday departures from Ann Arbor fill up weeks in advance - book early if that is your regular travel day.

Given the limited schedule, committing to specific trains and booking them months ahead is the most reliable approach.

On-Time Performance

The schedule table above shows the 6-month average arrival delay and on-time percentage for each commuter-window train on this corridor. Delay performance varies significantly by train - check the table before choosing a regular departure.

Trains that originate further down the corridor tend to carry accumulated delay by the time they depart. Earlier trains in the morning generally have better on-time performance than later ones.
